…DANGEROUS FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS POSSIBLE TODAY…
.A dry cold front is expected to cross the area this afternoon
with gusty winds that will shift from southwest to northwest. Dry
air remains across the region, and once again the relative
humidity is expected to drop below 25 percent from late morning
through early this evening. The combination of these factors may
lead to dangerous fire weather conditions.
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued
a Red Flag Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is
in effect from 10 AM this morning to 10 PM EST this evening. This
replaces the Fire Weather Watch that was in effect but is no
longer.
* AFFECTED AREA…Cherokee, York, Rabun, Anderson, Abbeville,
Laurens, Union, Chester, Habersham, Stephens, Greenwood,
Franklin, Hart, Elbert, Avery, Alexander, Iredell, Davie,
Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Catawba,
Rowan, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson,
Transylvania, Henderson, Cleveland, Lincoln, Gaston,
Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, Oconee Mountains, Pickens
Mountains, Greenville Mountains, Greater Oconee, Greater
Pickens, Central Greenville, Southern Greenville, Northern
Spartanburg, Southern Spartanburg, North Carolina Portion of
the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Caldwell Mountains,
Greater Caldwell, Burke Mountains, Greater Burke, McDowell
Mountains, Eastern McDowell, Rutherford Mountains, Greater
Rutherford, Polk Mountains and Eastern Polk.
* TIMING…From 10 AM this morning to 10 PM EST this evening.
* WINDS…West southwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph,
shifting to northwest as a cold front moves through this
afternoon.
* HUMIDITY…20 to 25 percent in the mountain valleys up to 35
percent on the ridge tops. 15 to 25 percent outside the
mountains.
* IMPACTS…Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now, .or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior.
