Snow, Ice & Trees….

Hello Neighbors!

With snow and ice possible here this weekend, now is a good time to prepare—especially since our mountain roads, power lines, and weather conditions can change quickly.   Many of you who have lived here for years know the drill but some are new to the area so it’s a good time to review!

Ice is a big concern because our trees and branches fall from the enormous weight.  Who should you call if a tree falls?

-If the tree falls on your house, call 911 first. Power lines could be involved.  They will dispatch the fire department.
-If a tree has fallen on a state road, involving a power line , call 911 first, they will dispatch the fire department.  If a tree is large, DOT  will remove the tree.
-If a tree falls on a private road and involves power lines, call 911.  Otherwise, the tree will need to be removed by those on that road.

Emergency Supplies to Have on Hand if power/water goes out

Drinking water (at least 1 gallon per person per day for 3 days)
-Non-perishable food (3+ days’ worth)
-Manual can opener
-Flashlights and extra batteries
-Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
-Fully charged cell phones and backup power banks
-Prescription medications and essential medical supplies, First-aid kit
-Extra blankets, warm clothing, hats, gloves and socks if you do not have a generator for power.
-Cash (ATMs may be unavailable during outages)
-full tank of gas

 Home Prep

-Safely stock firewood if you use a fireplace or wood stove
-Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing
-Keep space heaters clear of flammable materials
-Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
-Do not use grills or generators inside home –  carbon monoxide can be deadly.
-Bring pets indoors, ensuring they have food and warmth
-Leave sink cabinet doors open to keep pipes warm (remove toxic items for kids/pets). If you lose power and the weather is freezing, let a faucet drip- slow  & steady, not a trickle.  It should be the furthest away from the outside main water shut off .  WLOS has a great article HERE

Snow Plowing

If your road is a state maintained road it will be plowed but it may take a few days. If you live on a private road, it is up to you to hire someone to plow (maybe join in with your neighbors).  An easy way to check is to look at your green street sign – it will have SR in front of the number.  https://www.hendersonvillenc.gov/public-works/street-division/snow-and-ice-removal

 – Please do not park in the cul-de-sac or on the street if you can safely park elsewhere.  The plow trucks need the room to do their job!

 – Stay home if you can:) Remember to check on your neighbors who live alone, need assistance or are elderly.
 – We have a Private Facebook group for Rambling Ridge and Rambling Hills. It’s a great place to ask about road conditions, etc.  Click HERE to request to join the group!  (just for the people that live here in RR or RH – it will ask for your address so we can verify)

We can be waiting a few days if we get a lot of snow. Luckily we have a few wonderful neighbors who have trucks or tractors who volunteer to help when they can!  If you live on a private road and need to hire a snow plow driver,
Mr. Dig & Dump lives nearby:  828-388-3888

Just a quick update on the NCDOT plowing schedule. The department’s snow clearing policy in order is:

  1. Interstate routes (I-26)
  2. Primary routes (US25, NC225, etc.)
  3. Secondary (main) routes (Kanuga Rd, Willow Rd, etc.)
  4. Secondary (other) routes (Cantrell Loop, etc.)
  5. Secondary (sub-divisions) (Rambling Ridge, Loggers Run, etc.)
  6. Unpaved secondary routes

The RR Care Bears are on call to help!  Contact our coordinator,  Kenny Perry at 248-408-7379.

Stay safe and warm…
